Remnants from Gamma-Ray Bursts

چکیده

We model the intermediate time evolution of a “jetted” gamma-ray burst by two blobs of matter colliding with the interstellar medium. We follow the hydrodynamical evolution of this system numerically and calculate the bremsstrahlung and synchrotron images of the remnant. We find that for a burst energy of 10 erg the remnant becomes spherical after ∼ 5000 years when it collects ∼ 50M⊙ of interstellar mass. This result is independent of the exact details of the GRB, such as the opening angle. After this time a gamma-ray burst remnant has an expanding sphere morphology. The similarity to a supernova remnant makes it difficult distinguish between the two at this stage. The expected number of non-spherical gamma-ray burst remnants is ∼ 0.05 per galaxy for a beaming factor of 0.01 and a burst energy of 10 erg. Our results suggest that that the double-shell object DEM L316 is not a GRB remnant.

Gamma-ray bursts and their links with supernovae and cosmology

Gamma-ray bursts are the most luminous explosions in the Universe, whose origin and mechanism are the focus of intense interest. They appear connected to supernova remnants from massive stars or the merger of their remnants, and their brightness makes them temporarily detectable out to the largest distances yet explored in the universe. After pioneering breakthroughs from space and ground exper...

Hypernova and Gamma-ray Burst Remnants as Tev Unidentified Sources

We investigate hypernova (hyper-energetic supernova) and gamma-ray burst (GRB) remnants in our Galaxy as TeV gamma-ray sources, particularly in the role of potential TeV unidentified sources, which have no clear counterpart at other wavelengths. We show that the observed bright sources in the TeV sky could be dominated by GRB/hypernova remnants, even though they are fewer than supernova remnant...

Theoretical Models of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Models of gamma ray bursts are reviewed in the light of recent observations of afterglows which point towards a cosmological origin. The physics of fireball shock models is discussed, with attention to the type of light histories and spectra during the gamma-ray phase. The evolution of the remnants and their afterglows is considered, as well as their implications for our current understanding o...

Young Supernova Remnants: Issues and Prospects

The dynamical evolution of young supernova remnants (YSNRs) is governed by the density distribution in the ejecta and in the ambient medium. Analytic solutions are available for spherically symmetric expansion, including the transition from the ejecta-dominated stage to the Sedov-Taylor stage. YSNRs serve as valuable physics laboratories, in which we can study nucleosynthesis, the early evoluti...

Identifying Gamma-Ray Burst Remnants in Nearby Galaxies

We study the spectral signatures arising from cooling and recombination of an interstellar medium whose equilibrium state has been altered over ∼ 100 pc by the radiation of a Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) and its afterglow. We identify signatures in the line diagnostics which are indicative of a photo-ionized GRB remnant which is ∼< 5 × 10 4 years old . We estimate that at least a few such remnants sho...

Extended GeV-TeV Emission around Gamma-Ray Burst Remnants, and the Case of W49B

We investigate the high-energy photon emission around Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) remnants caused by ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) from the GRBs. We apply the results to the recent report that the supernova remnant W49B is a GRB remnant in our Galaxy. If this is correct, and if GRBs are sources of UHECRs, a natural consequence of this identification would be a detectable TeV photon emission a...
